the granola years

Kork-Ease platform sandals ~ they're back!!!

There is a bit of a 1970's vibe going on these days. Or if you're the beautiful Vix, it IS Your Vibe!
A Lovely Inconsequence just did a sweet post about her Summers with Seventeen Magazine when she was young. You can read it HERE.
I think it was probably the last era when we weren't all plugged in and connected by Social Media. If someone called you on the phone and you weren't home, you didn't even know about it. Or if you wanted to watch something on tv and you weren't going to be around when it was showing, well too bad for you. We could only get information by asking a real person or looking in a book. During the 1970's we all wore very groovy clothes but we very rarely took photos of our bad selves and when we did snap a photo, we usually had to wait days to see the results. And there were only about four types of shampoo in the stores but we all used the yummy dark green one called Herbal Essence
  You could wander around for days and nobody knew where you were or what you were wearing or what you were eating or what your feet looked like from your personal perspective. We were Free, just like Joni, Unfettered and Alive.
I refer to these ancient times as The Granola Years. If you'd like, you can check out my 1970's Pinterest Board right HERE.
~~~~~~~~~
I actually love our present era of connectedness. Instagram, Google, YouTube, Pinterest, BLOGS!!! Heck Yeah!  Even though I have my flip flops firmly planted in my 2016 era kitchen I have decided to cook up a batch of my Home-Made Granola using the same recipe I have been using since about 1972.
BASIC GRANOLA ~ makes about 3 cups
3 cups old fashioned rolled oats - not instant
3 Tablespoons packed brown sugar
1/2 heaping teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon Kosher salt
1/3 cup honey &/or maple syrup
1/4 cooking oil
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup coarsely chopped nuts &/or seeds of your choice
Mix this all together until well blended.  Spread evenly on a rimmed baking sheet and bake in a 300 degree Fahrenheit preheated oven for 15 minutes. Stir the mixture around and continue to check and stir every 5 to 10 minutes until the whole thing is a nice toasty brown and the house smells awesome. When it is cool you can add 1/2 cup dried fruit or raisins if you'd like. Store in an airtight container up to 2 weeks.
And in keeping with the spirit of the '70's I'm wearing a pair of vintage flair jeans and an embroidered Baja Surfer tunic from FenixVintage on Etsy.
Do you have a favorite recipe that you've been making forever???
By The Way.
  3. Me too, me too! My Mom used to make granola in the seventies. Your recipe looks familiar, but I can assure you there was no organic coconut oil in our kitchen in the seventies, LOL.
    We were recently at an Arlo Guthrie concert...I've been 'reliving' the good 'ol days for a few weeks now.
    1. Me too!!! In the seventies it was most likely good old corn oil. Arlo Guthrie. Now there's a guy that probably knows his granola. We went to a Crosby Stills and Nash concert last year. Ha Ha. Lots of canes and walkers and a sea of grey hair.
  7. It's funny how freeing no answer phone is. We have an old rotary phone and if it rings when we're gone, then they have to try again. I like a lack of technology in some aspects of life. You look gorgeous by the way xx
    1. You have a rotary phone? Wow. I love those. They are so beautiful and substantial and the ring is insane.
  8. Hello Connie: Hubby keeps us in home-made granola and I adore the scent of it when it's baking away. Ahh those pre-internet/social media years. I am actually on the fence about it all. Of course I do love blogs, but I am afraid that the younger generation/s are missing out on how to sit with boredom, and how to have real conversations.
    I look back fondly on spending hours in the library, researching something that piqued my interest.
    Oooh I love those subway tiles in your kitchen! And you look fab! xox
  9. Were we the same person? Perhaps. Though I stubbornly refuse to participate in social media now, and my kitchen is still firmly rooted in the '70s, along with my preference for altered states. And a disdain for polyester.
    1. Connie, we may in fact be the same person. My daughter is the social media specialist for a large company. That's how she makes her living. I have embraced social media in an attempt to stay in touch with my kids. Though they can still figure out plenty of ways to ignore me.
  10. You flatterer, you! I want to come and live in the first photo, those album covers and cute sandals are pure art.
    Your embroidered hippy top is adorable and I need to try your granola recipe, I've never eaten it - a terrible confession for a hippy chick.
  11. Well hello there! How lovely to see you, looking so slim and beautiful. I love the sound of this granola, think I might need to try it out. I was very interested by the kosher salt bit. What makes it kosher? I'm not sure we would even be able to get such a thing in the UK, we're a bit behind! :) You paint a lovely picture. I do actually slightly yearn for a time when we didn't have to be quite so accountable. Xxx
    1. Slim? Really?? I used that special slim filter on my camera. Kosher salt really just means coarse salt and not the super fine stuff. Unless of course you're Kosher in which case it means Kosher.
  13. Both my sons think I grew up in the best time, yeah the 70s and the 80s. I have to agree with you on the freedom we had back then. And also like you I quite like todays technology, but I am not keen on the over use of it with those so very young. We all need to get outside and play no matter what age. Granola, yum! Well done to Goody, and yes she is the best of the best!
  17. I just have to say how much I adore your all white kitchen! SO jealous!
    I used to bake my own granola up until about a few months ago and I started doing overnight muesli which I make up once a week. It is easier, doesn't use any sugar and I like it just as well. I pour some bran buds on top for some added crunch just before I eat it.
    We didn't have much of the stuff you talked about in the 80's either. Most people still didn't own mobile phones and we didn't have a computer. No DSLRs either, or at least no one I knew owned one.
    It has most certainly changed the way we see the world and allowed us to connect with like minded individuals, but I often I miss "the good old days".
    bisous
    Suzanne
  19. Aw gosh, you're too nice to me saying such kind things.
    That top is gorgeous-like YOU!
    Quick granola story:
    My mother was diabetic so we never saw sugar in the house and everything was "sweetened" (and I use the term loosely) with those horrible saccharine tablets or the liquid drops.
    A hippy health food store opened in the neighbourhood (I'm pretty sure they were associated with some sort of cult but nothing too Manson-ish because they were too stoned and lazy to go on any killing sprees) and because hippie cult members know nothing about diabetes they were selling her all this raw honey, dried fruit and granola. This was probably horrible for her condition, but for a sugar deprived child getting her first taste of granola it was like angels burst through the clouds on sunbeams. There's nothing in this world better than granola when you're nine and the only sweets in the house are sugarless grapefruit flavoured hard candy.
    Ahhh, granola. And maple syrup too.
  21. Look at you! You are bloody gorgeous you are.
    Over the last few years I find myself going back to the Seventies and it's sensibilities. I know it wasn't all rosy here in the UK when I was growing up, but it seemed so to me. A lot more simple too which is what I think I'm gong back to! I'm definitely trying that Granola recipe-it's scrumptious!xxx
  22. Love, love, love this post and your first hand memories of the decade the directly proceeded the one in which I entered the world. I didn't get to experience the seventies and all their pros and cons myself, but it's when my folks came of age and my childhood was ripe with the music and many cultural references/elements of them all the same, so in many ways, I do feel a strong connection to the seventies and know that I always will.
    Thank you for this fantastic post and yummy granola recipe, Connie. Your tunic and jeans outfit is all kinds of marvelous!
    Big hugs,
  23. Ah, the good old days of existing in only one place at a time. Social media is fun, but it feels demanding sometimes. I've sort of put myself in a chrysalis state, waiting to be reborn in the UK (only 25 days now!), but I'm glad I peeked out to see what you're up to. Granola - yummmmm! My best recipe is an apple cake made with olive oil. It turns out well every time, which for me is a godsend!
  24. Connie,
    Thanks for taking me back! You described that time very well!I remember it much like that. I had a set of encyclopedias in my room if there was anything I wanted to know about. Love the peasant blouse. Now in the seventies I would have taken it and put rubber bands in it, and dunked it ib a bucket of dye. Or maybe not.
    I myself, was a clog wearer.
    I do love your kitchen! You look very Joni in your Martha kitchen! ;)
    I love cork platforms and wedges, so soft!
    such fun, this post!
      although my very young parents were in their 20s in the 70s - there was no "flower power" and such. it felt more like the 50s - without the glamour.....
      will look to find something to knit a post around :-)
  26. Yes, you are a time traveler, Connie. As Beate states, from Grannies, now the 70s, and then there was Coco Channel. And you look like you belong to each one. A true renaissance woman. or maybe a Dr. Who assistant?....
  29. Thanks for the blast from the past. These were my happy days too. We didn't have a phone and I had to walk to the end of the road to call who, heck I can't even remember who I used to call. Am so decrepit that my brain is beginning to shrink. I love your top. I think I used to have one similar the first time around. It had multicoloured embriodery - perhaps that's why I bought the new one that you've just seen on my blog - trying to recreate the olden days x
  30. I was in high school during the 70's in a small town, and my clothes came from the Sears catalogue so I didn't have much in the way of cool outfits. I think I had a tunic top similar to the one you're wearing in this post.
