My Nice Dentist

Does this look a little like an open mouth to you? Maybe it's just me..

I have always been afraid of the dentist. It was very difficult for my Mom to drag me out of the house for an appointment when I was a kid. And now that I actually have to make my own appointments, I sweat and I fret and when I finally do head out the door I have to drive around and around doing deep breathing exercises just to get into the dentist's office.
Then I moved to California and met my current dentist, Debbie. A dentist named DEBBIE. She has soft small girl hands, and big blue eyes and beautiful teeth. Of course she does! Her hobbies are making pearl jewelry (though I suspect they're really TEETH not pearls) and growing orchids.
So I sit in the chair and admire her jewelry and her teeth and listen to her stories and sometimes she sends me home with some of her orchids...in an old brandy bottle. They should teach this stuff in dental school!

  1. I am not so,keen on the dentist either... Despite knowing all about managing anxiety (I taught courses in it for years) I can feel myself going rigid and my thinking gets completely catastrophic...
I need Dentist Debbie! Though my dentist is pretty nice too.
Those orchids remind me more of a different part of the anatomy... Think lower! (I'm not obsessed, honestly!)
Hope you are doing OK, Connie. xxxx

  2. I dread visiting the Dentist too. Not the most fun place to visit. A least those orchids are gorgeous.

  3. Oh my GOSH! We have even more in common.
I have a serious FEAR of the dentist. And I was just there this afternoon laying in THE CHAIR getting a cleaning.
When I was little I would clamp my mouth shut like a piranha. My Mom would be so embarrased and tell me... "Melanie you open your mouth RIGHT NOW" And I knew if I didn't I would be in BIG trouble so I had to listen. I used to think up scenarios like when we pulled up to my appointment, I would open the door and RUN AWAY and hide in a store or something until my time would be up... Sadly I was too scared to do that cause I knew it would get me grounded or something. Today Dr. Oz was on the T.v. and while I was getting my teeth scraped at I was staring at the T.V. while SERIOUSLY PRAYING IN MY HEAD!* HAHAHA But thankfully after all these years I got the coolest Hygenist I could ever ask for. (Although SHE DOESN'T GROW ORCHIDS) But she's nice and not scary at all. Best of all she gives me Pina Coloda orajel! *woot*

  4. So funny! I have the exact same memories going to the dentist. I still have some dental anxiety but it usually subsides once I get in the chair. I once gave my dentist office a bouquet of daffodils from my mother's garden (when I was about 8) because I thought they'd be more gentle to my mouth if I did that. The receptionist just took them and slammed the glass partition shut! The nerve!

  5. No, I'm getting the same vibe as Curtise! Must be our dirty English minds.
I've always liked going to the dentist, no idea why, I've had 8 teeth removed, all kinds of orthodontic work and endless fillings. I must be some kind of masochist! xxx

  7. Thank you for your lovely comments, Connie!! I just realised that they are not showing on Disqus but showing only on Blogspot. Do you see the Disqus platform when you try to leave a comment on my blog? I think it only works with Firefox and newer versions of Internet Explorer. :(

Anyhow, I'm very happy to hear you have a nice dentist! I am due for wisdom teeth surgery in early Feb, so I know how you feel about dentists... Thankfully my orthodontic surgeon is super nice as well!

    All the best

  11. LOL when you say that the necklace is maaaaybe made of teeth! That gives a whole new spin on the skull trend going on.
I wish I got flowers from my dentist too, but once, when someone in the chair was telling a joke and said, "Yeah, but who'd stop to pick up a penny?," my dentist replied, "A dentist would." (!) Clearly, not Debbie. I always kept my mouth shut as a kid too, and we didn't have freezing.

  16. Why are people scared of the dentist? They are nice! I remember when I was a kid, my dentist usually gives me candies (which is so ironic, right?) after the session that I always looked forward to. I always want to go to the clinic because my mom won't let me eat sweets, and I always get to do that there. Maybe that's why I loved going to the dentist. Hahaha!

  17. Nice! I can feel that you’re slowly getting confident of seeing a dentist this time. Your dentist must’ve been really good because you’re starting to have a positive outlook towards it. :) I'm sure you’re looking forward to your dental appointments. Keep it up, Connie!

  18. Finding the right dentist for you involves a combination of factors. One of these factors is compatibility. Some dentists are specialists in treating patients who are fearful of dental procedures, whether it’s filling a cavity or performing a root canal. Your dentist seems like a perfect match for you. ^___^
