I feel bad about my neck

"Our faces are lies and our necks are truth. You have to cut open a redwood tree to see how old it is, but you wouldn't if it had a neck."   Nora Ephron

I have been practicing my selfies. Too close?
No, I don't think so.
The more pictures I take of my Mug the more I realize that "I feel bad about my neck." I really do.
I actually really like my grey hair and I don't mind the wrinkles on my face.
But dear Nora Ephron was so right. It's all about the neck.
Did you ever read This Book?
Perhaps it is the dreaded "tech neck" or perhaps it's just plain old aging but I simply cannot stand the sight of my aging neck.
I am terrified of plastic surgery and I have already spent a small fortune on gooey neck creams. I'm not much of a choker necklace wearer and most scarves usually just end up in my bag.
So I have decided to take a cue from Diane Keaton and Jackie O and wear turtlenecks. Even in the summertime.
It's not doing much to eliminate my hot flashes but that's just a sacrifice I'll have to make.
turtleneck ~ Delia's
leggings ~ Athleta
x-stitch denim tunic ~ thrifted from Double Take in Solana Beach
ballet flats - Born
See? It works. Even when making a big ole double chin!

So if you are a youngish person with a lovely smooth swan-like neck take my advice. Do yourself a favor and take a LOT of beautiful close up wrinkle free photos NOW. Right this minute! GO DO IT!! Some day you will be happy to have a record of your silky smooth neck days.

Now I'm off to find a turtleneck bathing suit.

  1. Hahaha, Connie. I have always loved the title of that book but haven't read it - yet. I'll be the one in the swimsuit change room next to you, screaming. I have recently tried photos looking skyward. It really smooths the neck. Not handy for walking or eating. Details, details.
I'd never heard of tech neck before. Why don't we talk about MEN with tech neck. That makes me so mad!!!
You look smashing in the garden. I love your turtleneck. I love your real neck too.

    1. Alrighty Ms. Melanie. I have seen you in a bathing suit and the screaming would be screams of joy. Yeah. MEN. Hrumph! When I mentioned my aging neck to my son he said, "Well, Mom, you could always grow a beard...."

  2. Unfortunately, I hate wearing turtlenecks. So I wear shirts with sport collars. I seldom wear v- necks. Why not check out how Carolina Herrera dress up? She is one of the beautiful, elegant and well dressed women who dress according to her age and she does it really well. I would follow her.

  3. Ha ha! Can't wait to see that bathing suit!

Normally I hate the double chin a turtleneck gives me, but I can see myself going the way of the higher necklines soon enough.

Love the smock. You're looking spry : )

  4. I feel bad about your neck, too, because you're so critical of it. You have a lovely neck, the neck of a woman who loves her gray hair and wrinkles, the neck that holds up the head with a kick-ass brain and sense of humor, the neck that got you through some really tough times and still held your head high. Embrace it, darling, metaphorically, that is.

And I agree with Melanie, let's talk about MEN with tech neck for a change. I love your tunic, by the way!

  5. Have you seen Violinist's Neck. They get saggy on one side only. I know!!
Enough to turn me off the violin for good if the high screechy notes near my ear didn't do it first.
Why does our skin slide off our face? Never get a good answer to that.
Shall we try stickytape? 😀 I hear you my dear and join you in your misery, but what can we do?
Not sure I would go with turtle necks. Have you seen them? Scrawny wrinkly things! Yours is much better!!! Xo Jazzy Jack

  8. Oh Connie, I know exactly what you mean! I hate my 'turkey neck'! Have you tried the 'kiss the ceiling' exercises to cure your saggy neck? Well, don't bother because THEY DON'T WORK!

Love your tunic and your grey hair. AND your turtlenecks!

    xx

  9. Hilarious! You've got to have a sense of humour about ageing otherwise you'd spend the rest of your life feeling depressed and there is a still a lot to be happy about. My neck aged overnight when I was about 38, I was shocked, I was expecting it later. Hey ho, I wear polo necks too but not in summer, then, everyone has to put up with seeing it or sometimes I wear a scarf.
Try taking a pic with your face resting on your hands, all the celebs do it to hide their wrinkles.
Anyways don't stress.... you have a lovely face and figure. x

  10. Connie you are gorgeous inside and out. Necks and the tops of our hands!! Bloody giveaways for age for sure. At least you can laugh about it all.

  11. Listen to your own advice, Connie. Enjoy your neck now. Later on you'll wish you realized how great you looked. Or it'll be something else to focus on that's lacking. You know the drill. Coming from one that knows it too. x-nay the urtle-tay.

  12. Maybe that's why I subliminally like them! People say I have good skin but my neck didn't get much attention and now I see the difference and wish I put sunscreen there as well. But one can't fight nature ultimately right?

  13. I could have written this myself. I'm fit for my age but when I look at photos, I cringe at the extra creases age has added to my neck. Like you, I've become self-conscious about them but, unlike other areas of our bodies, there isn't anything to do about them. Except maybe cover them up, but that's not my style. Good post, Connie.

  14. Ha, I know what you mean, I am surprised to see the increasing number of lines on my neck, and the chins seem to be multiplying... And my hands - however did those age spots get there? But I can't get too worked up about it, and I CAN'T wear a polo neck, they irritate the life out of me. So the world will have to tolerate the sight of my ageing neck (face, hands, etc) and that's that.
You look as cute as a button in your polo neck and tunic, in fact you look like a gorgeous little dancer complete with your ballet flats. But then you always look wonderful, neck on display or not! xxx

  15. Goodness me, woman. With a face as gorgeous as yours, who's gonna notice a wrinkly neck?
I can see the age lines creeping up on me so i just move the hair a bit further back from the mirror and dress in insane clothes to distract anyone who dares look! xxx

  16. Well, I've missed that boat so you'll see no photos of my neck. My chins and jowls on the other hand? Oh yeah, they're always present. You look so delectable in that outfit, slim and beautiful. You even suit a turtle neck, you gorgeous creature! Xxx

  17. I've always liked a good polo neck, even before I needed them (which I definitely do now). I hadn't noticed your neck, but I suppose the things we dislike about ourselves are always most noticeable to our own critical eye.

You thrifted that tunic? That's a seriously good score. As for the high neck swimwear, just Google, "Modest Swimsuits" and you'll find a wide variety. I'm so sun sensitive these days, I nearly bought one myself.

  20. Oh Connie, you crack me up … I'm sure you're neck is perfectly presentable … but you do look adorable in your turtle neck.

  21. Honey, I hate to burst your bubble, but turtlenecks are not the answer. All they do is provide a background for jowls. Trust me, I know.

Here's what I have found works for necks: I show more of it. Bring on the plungling necklines! Remember that wherever your clothes end, that's what you're highlighting. Now, add a collarbone-length hairstyle - voila! instant swan neck.

As for moisturizers, ANYTHING you use on your face you should also use on your neck, chest and hands.

Throw in a few face/neck yoga exercises that you can do whenever you're wasting time (bus stops, watching TV, waiting for the pasta water to boil), and you will have a neck you can live with.

BTW, try Frederick's of Hollywood for the turtleneck swimsuit. And, in a swimsuit, my neck is the least of my worries!

  24. Hello Connie! I love that outfit so much!!
I also am not a huge turtleneck fan, but I do love scarfs! Or is it scarves?
And I tell young-ones to take naked photos - don't I sound like a perv? But it's true! People think they are too fat or too thin when they are young, and when we look back on photos of ourselves we say "what were we thinking? we were gorgeous!" xo

  25. Connie you look absolutely beautiful my dear! I love how you style this outfit! Big hugs! xo

  29. Good Morning Connie, You know the resent bad hair cut that I got was more about the fact that it was so short it left my neck and chin exposed more that I wanted. I love short hair on others but mine has to be somewhere between chin and shoulders (that is short as I go) for me to be comfortable. It will probably be January before it grows back that long. It's a shame that the people that cut our hair don't have to live with the results of their not paying attention to what we ask for. Especially when you take in a photo to show them the length you like. I'm very far from being a beauty, so I have a real need to not be someones guinea pig. I am not one that would ever do plastic surgery . . . my surgeries must be life threatening, but for some people it is the thing to do. My sister has had two face lifts, they made her happy, so I say good for her . . . I'm just delighted that they went well and that she was pleased.
Have a lovely day and thank you for your sweet blogging friendship.
    Your blogging sister, Connie :)
