Listening to Records

George Marks photo

Do you remember Listening to Records? Sprawled out on the floor for hours reading and re-reading the liner notes. If you wanted to skip a song or listen to it again you had to v-e-r-y carefully lift up the needle and place it on the Exact Perfect Spot. There was really an art to that. And if you were inspired to get up to Dance, you had to be careful not to make the record jump. Exciting Times, n'est-ce pas?

These helpful instructions were on the inside of the case.

Our son loves music so his Old Folk Parents decided that he needed to Listen to Music on a Real Live Record Player. We gave him one that we bought on Ebay from an Old Elementary School in Texas! You can only imagine the kind of crazy cowboy stuff that was played on that thing!

Then we gave him all of our Old Records that had survived the sprinkler-in-the-garage incident of 2007.
The other day as I was dusting, I started listening to the Old Records. I got very Nostalgic and decided to roll off to Lou's Records in Encinitas.

I was in search of a Melanie record. I used to listen to Melanie over and over. I Just Love Her. I actually thought Brand New Key was about Roller Skating. Oh, the innocence of youth.
Did you know that Melanie Safka dropped out of the music business to raise her children and now in her 60's is off on tour Performing Around the World?! I'd say She's Done Alright for a Girl!

Did you see Moonrise Kingdom? There are some Beautiful Record Playing references in that film.

Listening to Records.  I highly recommend it!

Lincoln Fabrics

I have been shopping at Lincoln Fabrics in Venice, California for over 20 years. Every home I've lived in since I first discovered this store has had curtains made from fabric purchased at Lincoln Fabrics. It is one of those big cavernous places, sort of messy, full of hidden treasures, staffed by hip but sulky design students. It has been in business since 1948. It was always an adventure to shop there.
Just last week I went on a long awaited visit and noticed that it just didn't seem the same...

The windows looked a little off.

The shelves were abnormally messy.

Oh No! Lincoln Fabrics is Closing at the end of this month!
I only had a few bucks in my pocket but I had to get to work. This would be my last chance.

This photo is blurry because I was getting dizzy with excitement!
I got completely lost in the novelty print section.

Here is my final purchase:

I could not resist this cowboy fabric.

So that's the end of Lincoln Fabrics. Even this unicorn on display couldn't save it.

Good bye Old Friend. Thanks for Everything. I will miss you.

There's only one very good life and that's the one that you know that you want and you make it yourself.

Well, I finally got out of the house and managed to sit my tush down into a theater seat.  Lori & Mary I went to see Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel.

I won't bore you with my review (I Loved It!) but if you like Fashion and you are interested in the History of Fashion and you are intrigued by Interesting Characters then you will Love this, too.

Diana Vreeland was Quite The Character. She was a real romantic who celebrated uniqueness. A lover of Movement and Beauty and Life. She knew exactly who she was.
So until you get a chance to see the film, here are just a few photos of the great DV.

Moi ~ Dork

A friend who is a regular lurker on blogs recently asked me why I don't post pictures of myself and link them to one of those "old birds keeping it together" websites. Well, easy for her to say since she doesn't have a blog (though she should!)
Actually I HAVE thought of it but I'm still not so sure...

These are the reasons I don't post pictures of myself in my latest outfit:
1.  I am a minimalist with a lower case m! I have very little color in my wardrobe. In fact, most pictures of me look like they were taken in black & white.
2.  I rarely wear jewelry or even SHOES for that matter. Not very interesting...
3.  I wear pretty much the Same Thing Every Day. I can barely even remember the last time I bought something new. There would be lots & lots & lots & LOTS of repeats.
3.  I don't own a tripod and my teenaged son informed me that taking pictures of myself in front of a mirror is DORKY. (I was taking this picture in His room in front of His mirror when he informed me of this.)

So here I am.  Moi, Dork.
linen dress, bought with employee discount at Eileen Fisher from when I worked for that DEMENTED company.
jeans, Banana Republic, have had them forever
flip flops, my trusty Reefs

This was taken right before I blew out my back. As soon as I'm better and I can get dressed without wincing, I will buy a tripod and consider joining the "old birds."
And for those of you who have been posting pictures yourselves with so much Beauty and Grace, I am IN AWE of your Skills!!!!!

Three Things

Since this incident, it has been discovered that I am dealing with a herniated disc and a pinched nerve. Ouchy Wa Wa!
So it is Especially Important that I Take Note of the latest Three Things that are keeping a Smile on my Face.

The Sunsets have been Especially Gorgeous lately.

Life imitates Art.

I'm calling this "The Three Graces"
I found this Wonderful old Photograph at the Antique Mall. I'm going to frame it and hang it in the Guest Bathroom where it will Confuse my Male Guests and Delight my Female Guests.

And for Dessert, if you're in the mood, here's a little ancient Fleetwood Mac Cheerfulness.
Actually, that makes four things. Oh, whatever, I NEED an extra thing right now!

What are YOUR Three Things???
