overalls

Do you Recall your Very First Personal Fashion Moment???
My first Memory is of Overalls.
I must have been about three years old. At least I hope I was only three! I was wearing the type of Toddler Overalls that snap on the inside of the legs for quick emergency trips to the potty. The snaps were unsnapped, the pant legs were flapping around and I started twirling around singing, "I'm wearing a dress." My First Fashion Moment. Tra La.
Well, the fashion neurons in my brain must have imprinted on those overalls because I have owned and worn some form of bib overalls practically every decade of my life.
Meanwhile it is finally RAINING in SoCal!!!
El Nino ha llegado. YIPPEE!!!!

We're hunkered down doing inside rainy day things like
packing up holiday ornaments
baking cookies
and searching for new knitting projects

  1. So nice to see you up and about with your ever-present sidekick pancake.

Hooray on the rain! Shall I send you some of the snow we have? We only have a bit, you can take it all. I'm generous like that.

These overalls look super cute on you.

I used to own some back in the 80's. I haven't gone back to them yet.

First fashion memory? Having my first ever store bought sweater and jeans of my very own. Normally all my clothes came from my Grandma that sewed the exact same outfits for both me and my younger sister. I'd never owned a pair of jeans. I think it was Grade 2 or 3.

    1. What a sweet story. Store bought jeans. You were just gearing up for your Anthro obsession.

  2. I had some very cool white embroidered Balinese dungarees when I was a teen and loved them. My first fashion experience I remember was a shift dress(that was mine, all mine, not a cast off from one of my sisters that I had to grow into) in bright wild colours with a cat on it. The front had the front of the cat and the back had, you guessed it the back of the cat. I would so wear that now if I found one in an adult size.

  3. I remember diapers and I hated them. Things got better from there.
I can imagine you twirling in your unsnapped overalls. The sweetest image. And you still look sweet twirling in them.
Pancake looks confused by the rain.
You indoors activities look inviting! I think you might need more chocolate chips in your cookies. Bwahaha! Yum!

  4. I bet you were an adorable three-year-old! And I think they should make grown-up overalls with snaps, also, for convenience.

I remember having four sunsuits that my sister outgrew. They were cotton onesies with no legs, elastic waists, and tie straps at the shoulders. I loved having four the same but in different prints, especially the giant polka dots. Wore them all summer. Then I outgrew them.

OMG, that cookie dough looks scrummy!

  5. I do remember my first fashion moment. It was in Kindergarten. I had a dress which was my favorite. I knew there was something sort of ugly about the color combination, black, brown, white. But I just loved it and thought I looked so smart in it with my crooked bangs. ;)

  6. I came home from grade school. Walked right up to my mom and said in a rather sassy tone, "You need to take me shopping. I'm not getting enough compliments."

My mom just looked at me and said, I've created a monster."

I do remember when I was about 11, all of a sudden feeling silly wearing socks and having that grown-up Eureka moment that I now needed to wear stockings !! I never looked back after that and have loved fashion ever since.

And that photo of D Selfe is gorgeous. What great patterns in that book - have you your eye on any one in particular?

I remember I had got one in the late 70's too...( but I also remember that the denim fabric wasn't soft !! )

My fashion memories start when I received my first Barbie doll ... I had a dear friend and we met for the catwalks! We spent so perfect summer afternoon in the city park!

I confess that I love how they look but I remember the last I wore a pair, I was 6, they were pink cordhuroy and I was told off for giving what was deemed a silly answer in school assembly and made to stand up with the naughty boys. I was mortified! That was the last time!!Xx

  18. My first fashion moment was a bit older than you. I think I was about 5 and remember standing in the corner waiting to see Father Christmas in a semi dark hall at our school Christmas party. I was wearing a pale blue party dress with white etched pattern and a white net underskirt - I felt like a fairy and revelled in the moment of awakening. Am off to have a look around your blog as it's my first visit. Hello and nice to meet you.

  21. Oh you look so great in your "over-hauls" as we called them.

My first memorable fashion moment was my sister taking me for my first bra when I was nine. She asked the saleslady where the Training Bras were, and the elderly woman looked me over, and declared, "I think they're already trained." She then sold me a regular old bra without the padding. I remember it was white with gigantic thick straps that cut into my shoulders and showed through everything.

We are lining up for some long awaited drops right this minute....but still waiting.
Your overalls are so cute. My hubby hates them so I don't indulge.
My earliest fashion memory is of a woolen kilt and being fascinated by the leather belt feeding through the hole in the wool to be buckled. I was very young 2 or 3.

  28. Overalls never made it into my lifelong fashion loves, but I understand why they're in yours. You look adorable! I vividly remember lots of pieces from my early childhood but the first thing I remember being obsessed with was a brand new pair of "dungarees". They were stiff and I still remember the smell of that new denim. With two older sisters, my clothes were always hand-me-downs so this was special!

Love your pictures. I wish we could give you some of our rain. XXXOOO

  29. Connie, we've been hogging all the rain. I'll try to send some over. How do you manage to stay so damn cute? I love you in your dungarees! So adorable. I love clothes like that which are funky and comfortable and actually they always make me feel young too, which must not be underestimated. My first fashion memory was a frilly petticoat belonging to my mother. I still have it! It was white with lacy layers and white ribbon lacing through it. When I was two I used to wear it around my neck pretending to be the Angel Gabriel, who, at the time I believed was a girl. I now have two tulle skirts and a Christmas fairy dress to take its place xxx

  30. I am a fan of overalls, and a fan of YOU, so I love this look! It looks comfy and timeless. My eyes are not working well, but this looks like a knitted piece? Loved the last photo of you the pooch, and the umbrella!
I am so glad you have rain! And you look adorable in these fun poses, your personality comes shining right through.
My first clothing memory was of a floral dress with crinoline , it felt scratchy on my skin, and I was not enamored.
i had a pain of tencel overalls decades ago, they were so soft, they looked like denim but were so comfy...wish i still had them..
enjoy the rain, read great books and bake away! Knit too, maybe a multi color scarf!

It was the akin to lighting the blue touch paper in me and liberating my very own fashionista. I'm indebted to these wonderful women and certainly wouldn't be running my blog without them.

  32. Now tell me, Connie - do your grown-up dungarees have press studs for quick and easy access? I'm just thinking that may be a useful USP when you start making your own pairs for us menopausal pelvic-floor-not-quite-what-it-used-to-be women. You could make millions! (Uh oh - have I overshared? Ha!)
You look fabulous. And your rainy day photos are beautiful. Me, I'm sick of the sight of rain, it's hardly stopped all winter. Floods and mud and grey and grimness, ugh. Your Californian rain is an altogether prettier affair.
First Fashion Moment? The Chicken Dress. Bright red with a yellow chicken print, a hand-me-down from my sister(s) but no less loved for that. Worn around the age of 2-3. I looked like a chubby boy stuffed into it, with a ribbon in my dreadful hair to try and make me look vaguely girly, but I think it may have started a lifetime's love of colour and print! xxx

  42. My mother's religious background did not encourage frivolity, but she loved clothes and married a Lutheran so....my earliest fashion memory is an Easter dress of brilliant yellow taffeta that rustled. I was then about 3 years old, so I couldn't reach it hanging in the wardrobe where the "good clothes were packed in moth balls but I do recall admiring it gleaming there beside mother's fur stole.

Mother probably gave it to a "deserving" tot. Drat it! Had I known at the time, I would have objected. Loudly.

  49. What an excellent question (if we remember our first fashion moment). I have memories of what I wore prior to this, but for me the one that jumps out the most from a very early age would have to be the negative experience of having a relative firmly tell me that the cute red and purple outfit I'd put together for myself clashed (seriously, who tells a kindergartener that?!). I was an incredibly sensitive (orchid) child and this impacted me a lot - clearly, if I'm still retelling the tale some 26 years later - and instead of deterring me, it had the opposite impact: it instilled in me the desire to always dress however my heart desires and I've been doing my best to stay true to that point ever since.

Many hugs & happy weekend wishes, stylish lady,
    ♥ Jessica

  51. I remember many, many beautiful dresses made from flour sack prints. When I was a little girl Momma would let me choose the printed sacks that she purchased flour in. Those sacks with her amazing ability to sew were transformed from flour sacks to pretty little dresses with pinafores and tie back bows in the back. When I think back I do believe with Momma's talent, I was one of the best dressed little girls in school. :)
    Happy Spring!
