Keeping Up Appearances

Oh My Gosh.
I have fallen off the map lately.
My apologies to my bloggy friends for my absence. I'm still here.
So let's see....where was I???

San Clemente longboard surfers circa 1940's
Not too long ago I decided to channel my inner Hyacinth Bucket and take my poor hapless Richard, I mean, JON on a day trip up the coast to a nearby Stately Home.
I got all dressed up in my favorite Anthropologie polka dots, assumed my bossiest persona, forced the dog and the husband into the car and set off up the coast to Casa Romantica in San Clemente, California.

Well, it turns out that Casa Romantica is not so much a stately home as a lovely old, rather large stucco house that was built in the 1920's.
My camera battery died not long after we arrived but I still managed a few shots.
The tile work blew my mind.
So here I present to you: TILE.

The view of the Pacific from the main house was indeed Romantica.
This is a painting on tile of the Grumpy Old Matriarch of the Casa.
Or perhaps this is the Queen Grump?
In my defense, I was trying to look coy. But I've discovered that as I age, what used to be a sexy sultry look now translates as "Get Off My Lawn!"

So, Kids, where have your feet been lately??

  1. I love the mosaic tiles, Connie, and you look radiant! I laughed when you mentioned Hyacinth Bucket. If I am not mistaken I have a video of her on an upcoming post. She always makes me laugh. :)

  3. Ha! Get of my lawn...you are funny and dead right! I don't think I can look coy anymore; it just looks like I want to punch someone's lights out!

What a lovely place and a completely different idea of a stately home. We're used to draughty mock castles and dark old piles in the UK. Love the tiles and the portrait. I might start a new line in grumpy lady portraits.
We should all take our inner Hyacinth out and about I say. Maybe leave the inner Rose at home though...xx

    1. Grumpy lady portraits. What an excellent idea. We can crack open a beer with Onslow to celebrate.

  4. Wow what amazing tile work, was that a fountain? Camera batteries just no when to die don't they. What a grand view of the ocean from the house, perfection I'de say. Well where have I been lately, well no where out of town so maybe that means I am due to go for a drive soon.

    1. Oh yes. The view is amazing. I just wish that my camera would have held out to capture the 1920's era bathrooms. They were equally breathtaking.

  7. I'm so happy you were able to force your family to get out and enjoy a mini getaway.

I love your polkadot top and your alluring, come over here before I slit your throat look. I always have that look when my husband takes my photos. Thus I usually use my tripod.

    1. Ha ha. You could tell that it was my husband that took the photo. The look of resignation on my face says it all.

  8. Hello stranger! Good to see you.
I could easily live in Romantica, I love an encaustic tile and a fancy water feature, not to mention a grumpy matriarch.
You do look very come hither, the polka dots are fabulous. xxx

  9. Your Tile presentation is exemplary! And I love how you hijacked the family to force them to have fun and romance. You DO look come thither, although these tend to me interpreted more and more based on context. Here is it on a soft "lounger," in the lawn it's next to a loud lawn mower. See? So great to see you!!!

  15. Whoa, that's a whole hell of a lot of California pottery goin' on in that tile! You know how obsessed I am with the stuff-and now you have me thinking about collecting tile too! I could use an ornate fountain in front of the house.

We had a tiled foyer growing up-I lived in fear of dropping something on my mother's precious imported Italian tiles!

I think you should insist your family have your portrait done in tile.

  18. I present to you, tile, and then get off my lawn. So funny, Connie. I think your come hither look is pretty good, as it goes. At least you don't look drunk or cross-eyed, which is how I imagine it might turn out if I tried it. Rather love this stately home. I love a day out somewhere new, so thanks for the trip. I refuse to believe that you are in the slightest bit Hyacinth Bucket, although I'd love to see a bossy impression or maybe hear your phone voice. Lady of the house speaking! Xxx

  19. No- I see that expression, as "My lawn is So Nice, so very very nice, now do I want you on my lawn on not? Hmm. Okay. Now there better not be ticks on my lawn or mosquitos, drat that Zika virus, where is my chilled wine. OH look at that view... Oh here is my wine,at last, Rosé perfectly chilled..
Love the gorgeous house, the view is something to relish over and over, and your expression, well, it could be interpreted many ways.
Needless to say you reign and you rock; Reign and rock Madame Connie!
Yes, those pillars and tiles, my eyes are glad!

  22. Great tile shots! My sexy face has transmogrified into wierd/grumpy/old now and can only get away with smiling as it helps to hold all the wrinkles and bags up and stops me looking too scary! Are those people or seals in the sea? My eyesight is failing me too, ugh. I did in fact write eyeshite which is probably a much better description of what's going on x

  23. The view of the Pacific! Lovely, forgot to mention it.
My feet have been happily in Manhattan, teetering in heels yesterday, and striding briskly along in platforms the rest of the time! ( My sneakers make my feet smell, TMI- I know, the ones that do not, take too much time to put on.. see more TMI. :)
