Gashlycrumbs

It's Tulle Time!!!!!!
striped tee ~ J Jill
white tulle over black tulle ~ made by me
leggings ~ who knows? who cares?
flip flops ~ guess what? Reefs!

Donchya just LOVE Tulle????
This time of year it is so important to add some tulle to your wardrobe for Halloween Costumes and Holiday Parties and Impromptu Tipsy Interpretations of the Nutcracker.
You just never know when you might need a some Tulle.

I had plans to do a little tutorial on how to make a tulle skirt.
A white one with and elastic waistband and a black one with a satin sash waistband.
But this tulle was being such a beatch that it turned into quite a tussle. A Total Tulle Tussle.
I kinda lost it. This was not the adorable DIY that I had planned.
So I scrapped the DIY. This type of thing happens more frequently than I'd like to admit.
I'll probably wear the black tulle over a skirt and the white tulle under. Maybe. Who knows.
Anyhoo....I decorated a Halloween Cake.
I am capable of making beautiful cakes. This is Not one of them.
mmmm....cake.
After my Tulle misadventure I Deserve Cake. Yes I Do.
And Since it's Halloween let me tell you about my deep abiding love for Edward Gorey.
I love him so much! I'm sad that he is gone because I just want MORE Edward St. John Gorey!
The Gashlycrumb Tinies is one of my favorites.
I actually bought this little book for my kids when they were younger.
I made certain that interspersed with Flopsy Bunnies and Madeline they had a healthy dose of Edward Gorey, Tim Burton and Lemony Snicket.
Hey, I'm just providing them with material for future therapy sessions.
You can see the whole book HERE

C is for CONNIE who ate too much cake

I'm off to crash the Halloween Party at Mis Papelicos' Share-in-Style

Oh Those Boys

Don't you just love hanging around the nicer men's clothing stores?
I do. All that tweed and tortoise shell and restrained testosterone.
Tons and tons of choices of virtually the same thing all subtly and beautifully well-made.
Not a lot of glitz and flashy color. Decisions quickly made and paid for.
Oh Those Boys. They are such simple creatures.
They can go on long voyages with just a few shirts, a pair of trousers, a pair of shoes and a toothbrush. I could probably do that, too, but it would not be pretty. I need an extra suitcase just for my underwear!
Classic men's styles have barely changed in the past 100 years.
That photo above was taken in the 1960's.
It looks like it was taken Today!

It's a photo from this little book.
Take Ivy was originally published in Japan in 1965 as a style guide to the American Preppy Style that was just becoming popular in that country.

All of these photos are from the book and they look completely contemporary, don't they?
With a few variations in collar length and tie width, my sartorially fabulous husband has worn pretty much the same style since I first met him in the 1980's!
I've included a picture of a Girl in a 1960's shift dress so that you can envision the era but now that I see that Shift...I Want It!!!!
But until I Find a Cute Retro Shift like that one....
I'd like to introduce you to my latest Fan.

Isn't he beautiful? All dark and woodsy. Looks like it belongs in a men's store. My husband spotted it while we were browsing in a consignment shop.
I have trained him well.

Nice simple controls. On/Off. High/Low. Just like the boys.
So today I am borrowing from the Boys.
Men's Size Large Shirt from Target
Men's watch - Timex
totally see-through linen dress - Eileen Fisher vintage
pewter leather skinny belt - J. Crew vintage
orthopedic sandals - Hush Puppies

Oh Those Boys. I Just Love Boys.
They have the Best Shirts.

A Little Bit About Henriette

These are two of the Favorite Books that live in the Kids' Bookcase.

Two Charming Authors, Robert Louis Stevenson and A.A. Milne
Illustrated by One of My Favorite Artists
Henriette Willebeek Le Mair.

So here are a few tidbits about Henriette:
She was born in Rotterdam, Holland in 1889.
Her family encouraged creativity. She published her first book when she was just 15 years old.
She ran a Nursery School out of her home so she had plenty of opportunities to observe children.
When she married H.P. Baron van Tuyall van Serooskerken (oh I love those Dutch names!) in 1920, they became followers of Inayat Khan and converted to Sufism. At this time she adopted the name SAIDA. I looked it up in the baby name book. It means "blessed, joyful." So you will see the full Henriette on older illustrations and Saida on the newer ones.
She stopped making art for the last 20 years of her life (she died in 1966) but she and her husband devoted their final years to helping the poor.

So here's a Joyful Sampling of Henriette/Saida from these little books.

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I think it is the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Julia Margaret Cameron

"The capacity for delight is the gift of paying attention."  Julia Margaret Cameron

The Echo

Sometimes on a Lazy Day I pull out one of my favorite little books and flip through the pages.

I Love Stories of Late Bloomers.
Julia Margaret Cameron discovered photography at the age of 48.
When you consider that the year was 1863, this is all that much more impressive.

Annie
This was her first successful photograph. Imagine...no photography schools or manuals. Lots of scary chemicals and techniques.

Summer Days

Many many years ago, when my kids were little, I was inspired to take this Julia Margaret Cameron style photo of my own children.
