Gashlycrumbs

It's Tulle Time!!!!!!
striped tee ~ J Jill
white tulle over black tulle ~ made by me
leggings ~ who knows? who cares?
flip flops ~ guess what? Reefs!

Donchya just LOVE Tulle????
This time of year it is so important to add some tulle to your wardrobe for Halloween Costumes and Holiday Parties and Impromptu Tipsy Interpretations of the Nutcracker.
You just never know when you might need a some Tulle.

I had plans to do a little tutorial on how to make a tulle skirt.
A white one with and elastic waistband and a black one with a satin sash waistband.
But this tulle was being such a beatch that it turned into quite a tussle. A Total Tulle Tussle.
I kinda lost it. This was not the adorable DIY that I had planned.
So I scrapped the DIY. This type of thing happens more frequently than I'd like to admit.
I'll probably wear the black tulle over a skirt and the white tulle under. Maybe. Who knows.
Anyhoo....I decorated a Halloween Cake.
I am capable of making beautiful cakes. This is Not one of them.
mmmm....cake.
After my Tulle misadventure I Deserve Cake. Yes I Do.
And Since it's Halloween let me tell you about my deep abiding love for Edward Gorey.
I love him so much! I'm sad that he is gone because I just want MORE Edward St. John Gorey!
The Gashlycrumb Tinies is one of my favorites.
I actually bought this little book for my kids when they were younger.
I made certain that interspersed with Flopsy Bunnies and Madeline they had a healthy dose of Edward Gorey, Tim Burton and Lemony Snicket.
Hey, I'm just providing them with material for future therapy sessions.
You can see the whole book HERE

C is for CONNIE who ate too much cake

I'm off to crash the Halloween Party at Mis Papelicos' Share-in-Style

Don't Let The Sound Of Your Own Wheels Drive You Crazy

This one goes out to all you Baby Boomers.
Holla!!!
Remember when Guys used to look like this?

The Eagles
Their Music was Big Part of the Soundtrack of my Western American Girlhood.

When I saw this knit print in the discount bin at the fabric store I suddenly got a
I was transported back to the 1970's in a flashback and had the urge to slather on some Pot o' Gloss
click HERE for a positively witchy Pot o' Gloss Ad
And bake a Harvey Wallbanger Cake.
We actually ate this?? It was basically just a way to grab an illicit nip of vodka under the guise of "baking a cake."
So of course I had to make a 70's inspired maxi dress.
I chose this pattern:

Hey McCalls!! La Robe took Way More than 1 Heure to Make!

And I got this result:

Showing off my New Dress and my New Screen Door.
It's been unusually Hot here lately. We need a screen door in Winter!
Her mind is Tiffany twisted.
Dress made by Me
Knit wrap cardigan ~ J Jill about 4 years old
Chapeau ~ Nordstrom
Ballet flats ~ Born about 6 years old
It still gets cold at night though.
Woo hoo witchy woman. She got the moon in her eyes.
Warm smell of colitis, rising up in the air.
So if you are Really and Truly a female Baby Boomer like Me, you are probably having a hot flash about now.
I'd like to offer you my favorite drink of the moment:

Iced Green Tea with Pomegranate Lemonade.
Ahhhhh....
You can check-out any time you like but you can never leave.

What is on the Soundtrack of YOUR youth?????

P.S. Hanging out with, Patti, one of my favorite fellow Baby Boomers!

All The World Is Love

Alfred Eisenstaedt's "Parisian Children Riding a Merry Go Round In a Playground"

What is the name of that affliction from which I suffer?
All one has to do is mention a Word or a Phrase and suddenly I'm Singing a Song.
It's more than an Earworm.
It's actually quite pleasant...for me anyway. I'm sure it drives everyone near me cray cray..
I choose from the playlist in my brain and sing the song around and around and around in my head until another song comes along.
Does that ever happen to you?
Please tell me that it does.
Really. I'm not insane. My mother had me tested. Click here

All that the adorable Jane from Flight Platform Living had to do was mention Carousel and I started singing along with the Hollies. Round and round and round and round....
And since I'm feeling rather 60's and the temperatures are in the 80's
This is what I'm wearing:
1960's model pose

By the Time I Got To Woodstock

There is this Moment in your Life when Real Events that You have Actually Experienced start to show up in History Books.
It is very strange and surreal when this happens and it makes you feel very important yet very old.

One of my husband's coworkers asked if her nephew could interview him for a history project.
They are studying the 1960's in history class and this kid was doing his report on The Woodstock Music Festival.
And my husband went to Woodstock. Yep. The actual Woodstock. His favorite band was Ten Years After. He and his friends brought sandwiches from home. They slept in the mud. Isn't that cute?
Here's his ticket as proof:

There was so much chaos that the organizers just stopped collecting tickets!

My husband is a teensy bit older than I am. I was too young too attend on my own and too old to be one of those cute kids that went with their parents...not that my parents would EVER go to Woodstock. Plus I lived on the other side of the country. And I didn't even know it existed until the movie came out. I loved the Woodstock movie. Have you seen it?  My favorite part of the film is when Canned Heat performs. Here's a little clip that I think you might enjoy. Click Here

Somewhere out there is my future husband

My husband doesn't have any pictures of himself and his friends at Woodstock. Unlike kids today, in the 1960's we didn't carry cameras or phones around with us everywhere. We just lived life for the moment, Baby...mostly undocumented.
But if you do like to look at photos of the 1960's you might enjoy the book "Hippie" by Barry Miles. The kids and I gave it to my husband a couple of years ago just to remind him of how super groovy he was...IS.

As I mentioned, I did not attend Woodstock. But if I had, I would like to have worn something like this:
Once again made from this pattern. Long this time.

Communing with Nature.
Groovin on the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
Grazin in the Grass. It's a Gas. Baby can you Dig It?
Granny Dress made by Me
 Peace Sign Earrings from Sundance
Ivy Wreath and Butterfly from Micheal's

I tried to take a picture of a real Butterfly but I wasn't fast enough. They are just so ELUSIVE!

The Doctor Will See You Now

Catching up on the latest magazines.

I Spend A Lot of Time in Waiting Rooms.
If you don't know why, you can find out here.
It seems like someone is always asking me to lie down and/or take off my clothes.
And I have to pay THEM for the honor!

This is my brain on drugs.

So I can either schlump in the door wearing baggy sweats or I can try to look cute.
As the Mahvelous Fernando Lamas famously said,
"It is better to look good than to feel good."
So I try to look good. But looking good is not always comfortable.
I find that a short sleeved or sleeveless tunic with leggings just works best.
Easy On. Easy Off.
Short sleeves so they can get that blood pressure cuff on or take some blood..uh oh...Hold on. I feel light headed. Head between Knees..uhhh..Ok. I feel better. Wheh!
Where was I? Oh yeah.
And leggings so I can kick my legs up in the air when I go out for my post check-up cocktail. Wheeee...

Sewing Machine to the rescue.

This is a riff on a dress from the early 90's. I made scads of these for my pregnant self and my toddler daughter back in the day.

I simply take a boxy men's t-shirt. I used a Hanes Men's ComfortSoft tee from Target, three to a package. Gather up some fabric like I'm making a skirt. Then attach the skirt to the t-shirt.  Et Voila!
I added pockets because I MUST HAVE POCKETS!

The Necklace is a Healing Crystal from a hippie store. Do I believe in Crystals? Not really. But lots of people do. I think Crystals are very pretty. And basically at this point I will take all the help I can get!
Do you believe in the healing power of Crystals?

I am wearing Flip Flops. Flip Flops are ALMOST SHOES!!!
Do I look like an aging toddler? Maybe. Do I care? Nope.
Do I look a little pregnant here? Possibly. Good. It will give the other people in the waiting room something to ponder.
"Is that grey haired lady REALLY pregnant? My my...the miracles of Modern Science."

Cool Clear Water

I recently moved to the town of Carlsbad, California which is just north of San Diego.
In 1882, long before I ever moved here, a farmer named John Frazier was drilling a well on his land when he struck a deep aquifer of alkaline mineral water.
It was very similar to the therapeutic mineral water from Karlsbad, Bohemia so they decided to name it Carlsbad Mineral Water
Until the 1930's many health conscious people from all around the world came to Carlsbad to "take the waters."  But during the Great Depression the whole thing to fell into disrepair. The depression had that effect on a lot of things.
Until the 1990's when a nice man named Ludvik Grigoras, who was born in Karlsbad now the Czech Republic, decided to declare Karlsbad and Carlsbad Sister Cities. He then worked to raise money to help restore the California spa. He even had his Czech sculptor friend create a bronze statue of John Frazier.
Yay for Ludvik Grigoras!!!!
If any of you have ever had a swig of tap water here in Southern California you would have to admit that it doesn't taste great. It comes all the way from Colorado and picks up some funky stuff along the journey so it tastes a bit "off" by the time it gets here.
Spring Water is the only way to go.
So you have to pay for it. Big deal. I think it's worth it.
If you are a Spring Water fiend like I am, I would like to introduce you to FindASpring.com
This web site shows you where to find Cool Clear Springs all over the World.
There might even be one close to you! Check it out.
So what does a Barefoot Aquarian wear to collect Spring Water?
A rayon dress with pictures of Cranes Flying over Water of course!
Made from this pattern.
I'm on a mission to make as many of my own clothes as possible.
Ha! We shall see.....

I leave you, hopefully well-hydrated, with some Vintage Cowboy Coolness*

Heading over to Patti's Visible Monday. See you there!

*I'm sorry if you can't see this on your ipad. I'm trying to figure that one out!
It's just a bunch of dapper old cowboys. You're not missing much.
